Dear Yael Bradbury
I'm sorry, but your letter of 15th May has left me totally confused. You state
that '… the term 'Cheshire Cheese' does not describe not the place where the
cheese is derived from.' I am familiar with the use of the double negative, so
I am aware that this means Cheshire Cheese does describe the place from where
the cheese is derived, i.e. Cheshire. This is confirmed by my Concise Oxford
Dictionary, its entry reading 'Cheshire Cheese, originally made in Cheshire,
(county in England)' However you then go on to contradict yourself by saying
that Cheshire is a type of cheese, not the place where it is manufactured,
which is clearly at odds with what you have previously said, and also at odds with
the Concise Oxford.
I am not happy about your cheese being made in Wales either, but I can see
the logic of it as their singing probably turns the milk sour.
Yours faithfully |
