Dear Mr Ravenscroft
Thank you for your letter of 19 May, commenting on our
previous letter to yourself.
May we firstly point out that Miss Bradbury did not
intentionally use a double negative: this was a careless spelling mistake. The
sentence was intended to read:-
the term
"Cheshire Cheese" describes not the place where the cheese is made, but the
process which is used to make the cheese.
As to your reference to the Concise Oxford English
Dictionary, may we draw your attention to the word "originally" in the sentence
("Cheshire Cheese, originally made in Cheshire"). As we understand it, the
process is determined solely on legal grounds. Some cheeses must be made in a
particular place in order to gain the appropriate title, whereas others are
permitted the title solely on the basis of the method of cheese-making.
We hope this has shed a little light on the matter,
and not simply complicated it further.
Unfortunately, with regard to Miss Bradbury's
christian name, she was only here on a temporary contract and has since left
the business and therefore unable to help you further with its heritage.
Thank you once again for taking the time and trouble
to contact us regarding our Cheshire Cheese. |
