Alzheimer's Disease    Degenerative disease which causes the loss of memory. Named after the German neurologist Alois Alzheimer (1864-1915) who first identified it. This is disputed however by the ancestors of British neurologist Arthur Holloway (1860-1916) who ten years before Alzheimer contracted the disease himself, succesfully identified it, but then proceeded to forget all about it.

American Line Dancing    A popular pastime imported from the United States, this is a sort of Country & Western formation dance. The dancers, who form up in columns and rows, have cowboy hats, cowboy boots, and an IQ of under 30, although only the IQ of under 30 is compulsory.

Amber    A bright yellowish-gold colour which is totally invisible to the drivers of cars approaching traffic lights.

Ambiance    A van-like emergency services vehicle used to transport people with cleft palates to and from hospital.

Ambrosia    In Greek and Roman mythology, food of the Gods. It is for this reason that most people don't aspire to be Gods, as no one in their right mind wants to eat a diet consisting of nothing but tinned rice pudding.

Ammeter    Instrument used in Lancashire for measuring the water content of tinned 'am.

An Arm And A Leg     A lot of money, as in 'He paid an arm and a leg for it'. Believed to have first been coined when a leper was handing over money for a new car and two of his limbs fell of.

Angles    An ancient northern tribe who had an angle on just about everything; the forebears of Spin Doctors.

Ann O'Rexia    Very thin Irish girl singer who failed an audition for the girlband B*witched because she insisted on singing in tune.

Antarctic    The Arctic if you are an ant.

Antantarctic    The Antarctic if you are an ant.

Anteater    A fast food joint for ants.

Antelope    The act of running away to get married to another ant.

Antenna    An ant which dies its hair bright red.
